The roundness and beauty of the A clarinet sound, thanks to some composers, have become expressions of new timbre, aimed at the search for intense and evocative nuances. Such is the case with Robert Schumann, in his Fantasiestücke op.73, where clarinet and piano embark on a journey of heated discussions, caressing words and leaps of courage, and the poetic, vocal Romanze op. 94, where clarinet and piano separate and, respectively, are recitation and container forming a photograph of feeling.
These works by Schumann are joined, in almost opposite tones, by Nino Rota with his Sonata in D. New, however, is the dialectic of Arthur Honegger’s Sonatina, the Swiss composer who revels in the natural counterpoint caused by the two instruments and plays with the colors floating in the air. Finally, of a totally different character, the unstoppable Theme and Variations by Jean Françaix, a renowned pianist who wrote this piece following a commission for pieces in a clarinet competition at the Paris Conservatory.
