Three works, three different looks at the human soul and its ability to transform life and history into sound. In Ernest Bloch’s Three Nocturnes (1924), the trio becomes the voice of a suspended intimism, in which light and shadow chase each other in short sound pictures. Dmitry Šostakovič’s Trio No. 2 Op. 67 in E minor, written in 1944 in the midst of World War II and dedicated to the memory of his friend Ivan Sollertinsky, is one of the highest musical testimonies to collective grief: a work that alternates lyrical intensity, sarcasm and tragic dance, taking music’s ability to shape horror to the extreme. Finally, Walter Rabl’s Fantasie-Stücke op. 2 (1896), winners of a Viennese competition presided over by Brahms, bring back a breath of youthful freshness and romantic lyricism.
A journey that, from nocturnal recollection to historical tragedy to the vitality of imagination, also speaks to our present, in which war unfortunately remains a topical issue.
