FIRST PERFORMANCE IN PALERMO

The program explores the eras and sounds of the string and piano quintet through the baroque and contemporary.

 

 

From the baroque Quintet for piano and strings Op. 56 No. 4 in E-flat major by Luigi Boccherini, performed on the small cello and the 1830Wetzels table fortepiano (which will be reopened after the latest restoration), one is catapulted into the contemporary Quintetto Sospeso by Giovanni Sollima , which, on the occasion of its recording on disc at the MARTHA recording studio, is being performed for the first time in concert in Palermo. The program will close with the latest work by young composer Carlotta Maestrini.

BEVILACQUA
CLARISSA BEVILACQUA
Violinist Clarissa Bevilacqua is known for captivating audiences with deeply inspired musicality; her playing has been described as “sublime and luminous” (Gramophone) and “of great elegance and lightness” (The Strad). Clarissa’s 2025/26 season includes numerous highly anticipated solo debuts, notably with the Münchner Symphoniker and the Münchener Kammerorchester. She will perform in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Isarphilharmonie, Schloss Elmau, Beethovensaal Stuttgart, Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Elbphilharmonie, Prince Mahidol Hall in Bangkok, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and Victoria Hall in Geneva. Her debut solo album, Mozartiana, will be released in spring 2026 on the Berlin Classics label, in collaboration with Bayerischer Rundfunk. Her album featuring the complete works for solo violin by Augusta Read Thomas and the world premiere of the Violin Concerto No. 3: Juggler in Paradise was released by Nimbus Records in collaboration with BBC Radio 3. Thanks to her close collaborations with contemporary composers, numerous new works have been written for her and dedicated to her, including Sun Plaits by Augusta Read Thomas, Clarissa’s Tango and Colombina by Richard Blackford, and Trazom by Giovanni Sollima. Highlights of recent seasons include performances with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte‑Carlo, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Cape Symphony, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Orchestra della Toscana, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, El Sistema Orchestra, and the opening concert of the 2023 Mozartwoche with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. Clarissa also performs regularly in a trio with cellist Giovanni Sollima and pianist Carlotta Maestrini. The trio recently recorded the album Short Trio Stories, featuring a repertoire ranging from classical to rock. In addition to her solo career, Clarissa is the founder and artistic director of DYNAMIKfest Salzburg, an annual chamber music festival for classical and contemporary music, unique in Salzburg, dedicated to promoting young artists and composers under 30. The festival presents dynamic concerts that juxtapose fresh, innovative works with timeless masterpieces, commissions and premieres new compositions, and engages the community through educational and social initiatives. Winner of numerous international violin competitions, Clarissa has received First Prize, the Audience Prize, and the Special Bärenreiter Prize at the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg. She also won the Grand Prize at the Cape Symphony International Violin Concerto Competition and second prize at the Monte‑Carlo Music Masters. In 2023 she joined the Classeek Ambassador Program and its artist roster as the winner of the international open competition. She is currently a selected artist of the prestigious Fondation Gautier Capuçon. Curious and driven by a great passion for learning, Clarissa earned her Bachelor of Music at just sixteen, with highest honors (summa cum laude). She then completed her Master’s in Violin at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Pierre Amoyal and her Master’s in Solo Violin at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin with Antje Weithaas.

KINGA WOJDALSKA
is a Polish violist active as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher, and principal viola with major international orchestras. She is a prizewinner at the Primrose International Viola Competition in the United States, where she received Second Prize and the Transcription Prize for her own arrangement of Grażyna Bacewicz’s Polish Capriccio. Her artistic work focuses on expanding the viola repertoire and enhancing the instrument’s role as an autonomous solo voice, with particular attention to 20th- and 21st‑century music. In 2022 she gave the European premiere of John Williams’s Viola Concerto with the Dohnányi Budafok Orchestra conducted by Gábor Hollerung at the Müpa Concert Hall in Budapest. Among her most notable performances are the Romanian premiere of Miklós Rózsa’s Viola Concerto with the Târgu Mureș Philharmonic conducted by Marc Kissoczy, and the Swiss premiere of Zwei Szenen by Elena Mendoza with the Arcen‑Ciel Ensemble under Mariano Chiacchiarini. Wojdalska performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe and has collaborated with artists such as Viktoria Mullova, Gidon Kremer, Steven Isserlis, and Giovanni Sollima. She has appeared in prestigious concert halls including the KKL Lucerne, London’s Royal Festival Hall, and the Tonhalle Zurich, and has taken part in festivals such as Krzyżowa Music, Verbier Festival Academy, Encuentro de Santander, and the Rome Chamber Music Festival. Chamber music plays a central role in her artistic life. From 2020 to 2023 she was a member of the Brompton Quartet, with which she made her debut at London’s Wigmore Hall. She is currently a founding member of the Veress Trio, winner of the Kiwanis Competition in Zurich (2025). Alongside her chamber activity, she has served as guest principal viola with orchestras such as the Aurora Orchestra, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and the Collegium Orchestra, and has also worked with ensembles including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. Born in Warsaw, Kinga Wojdalska received her early musical training at the Zenon Brzewski School of Music, where she studied with legendary Polish violist Stefan Kamasa. She went on to earn degrees from the Royal College of Music in London and the Zurich University of the Arts, studying with Nathan Braude in London and with Lawrence Power and Sergey Malov in Zurich. In the 2023/24 season she was a member of the Orchestra Academy of the Sinfonieorchester Basel. In addition to her performing career, Wojdalska is active as a pedagogue. Since September 2024 she has been a member of the faculty at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid, where she serves as Associate Professor in Lawrence Power’s viola class. She has received scholarships and support from institutions such as the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Bruno Schuler Stiftung, and the Lyra Stiftung. Several contemporary composers have written works for her, including Anna Dobrucka, who dedicated to her the solo viola piece L’etica dell’ambiguità, premiered by Wojdalska in Zurich in 2022. Her discography includes recordings of contemporary chamber music, among them Noah Max’s Sojourn on the album Songs of Loneliness, and a 2024 release featuring works by Gabriel Prokofiev recorded with the UNLTD Collective. She is currently preparing her debut solo album, devoted to 20th‑century Polish viola repertoire and including original arrangements. Kinga Wojdalska is supported by Thomastik‑Infeld and plays a contemporary viola made by luthier Jerzy Maślanka.

PETAR PEJČIĆ
Described as “an exceptional musician, with a gripping sense of narrative…” (Le Soir, 2022), Petar Pejčić is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most promising talents on the international classical music scene. Winner of the 2025 YCAT International Auditions at Wigmore Hall, Petar has also been selected as an ECHO Rising Star for the 2026–27 season, a recognition that will see him perform on some of Europe’s most prestigious stages, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. The 2024/25 season has brought numerous important concert appearances, including his UK debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and his South Korean debut with the Korean Chamber Orchestra at the Seoul Arts Center. His previous solo engagements include performances with major international orchestras such as the Helsinki Philharmonic, Kremerata Baltica, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, Graz Philharmonic, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, among many others. Born into a family of musicians, Petar began playing the cello at the age of four in his hometown of Belgrade. His professional career took off at fifteen, when he moved to Leipzig to continue his studies with renowned pedagogue Prof. Peter Bruns. Since then he has received numerous accolades at prestigious international competitions: in 2022 he was selected as the youngest finalist and awarded fifth prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, and the following year he won second prize at the 2023 Paulo Cello Competition. A passionate chamber musician with a strong collaborative spirit, Petar performs regularly alongside renowned artists such as James Baillieu, Janine Jansen, Amihai Grosz, Friedemann Eichhorn, Pauline Sachse, Martin Helmchen, and Florian Uhlig. Deeply committed to broadening the audience for classical music, he also takes part in volunteer initiatives and explores interdisciplinary projects. Particularly significant is his collaboration with choreographer Jacopo Godani and the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, which reimagines the relationship between music and movement in a contemporary key. Petar is grateful to have received scholarships through the generous support of the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein, the Freunde Junger Musiker Foundation, the Dr. Hübner Foundation, and the Peter Klöckner Foundation (Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben). He is also the first recipient of the J & A Beare Bursary (2023/24) and was selected for Switzerland’s Career Advancement Programme in 2024. Petar is currently pursuing advanced studies at the prestigious Kronberg Academy under the guidance of the legendary Prof. Frans Helmerson. He plays a fine 1694 Giuseppe Guarneri “filius Andreae” cello, kindly loaned by the Beare’s International Violin Society, as well as a Stephan von Baehr cello (Paris, 2012) on loan from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.

GIOVANNI SOLLIMA
is an internationally renowned cellist and Italian composer whose works are among the most widely performed in the world. He has collaborated with Riccardo Muti, Yo‑Yo Ma, Ivan Fischer, Viktoria Mullova, Ruggero Raimondi, Mario Brunello, Kathryn Stott, Giuseppe Andaloro, Toni Florio, Yuri Bashmet, Katia and Marielle Labèque, Giovanni Antonini, Ottavio Dantone, Patti Smith, Stefano Bollani, Paolo Fresu, Antonio Albanese, and with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Liverpool Philharmonic (Artist in Residence 2015), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Moscow Soloists, Berlin Konzerthausorchester, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Il Giardino Armonico, Cappella Neapolitana, Accademia Bizantina, Holland Baroque Society, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. He has composed music for Peter Greenaway, John Turturro, Bob Wilson, Carlos Saura, Marco Tullio Giordana, Peter Stein, Lasse Gjertsen, Anatolij Vasiliev, Karole Armitage, and Carolyn Carlson. He has performed at Alice Tully Hall, the Knitting Factory, Carnegie Hall (New York), Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), Salle Gaveau (Paris), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), the Sydney Opera House, and Suntory Hall (Tokyo). Since 2010 he has taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, where he was awarded the title of Accademico. In 2012, together with Enrico Melozzi, he founded the 100 Cellos. In 2015 he composed the sound logo for Expo in Milan and inaugurated the new museum space for Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini. Giovanni explores different genres using ancient, Eastern, electric, and experimental instruments, performing in the Sahara Desert, underwater, and with an ice cello. His discography began in 1998 with a CD produced by Philip Glass for Point Music, followed by eleven albums for Sony, Egea, and Decca. He brought to light the 18th‑century musician Giovanni Battista Costanzi, whose Sonatas and Symphonies for cello and basso continuo he recorded for the Glossa label. In October 2018 he received the Anner Bijlsma Award at the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. He plays a cello by Francesco Ruggieri (Cremona, 1679).

CARLOTTA MAESTRINI
studied with Andrea Lucchesini at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole and is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Music at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva under the guidance of Ricardo Castro. A winner of numerous prizes at competitions including the Steinway in Verona, Eliodoro Sollima, Premio Abbado, and Ibla, she made her debut at the age of nine performing Haydn’s Concerto in D major for piano and orchestra in Lecce, conducted by Francesco Libetta. She has performed in prestigious venues for various musical associations and major events, both in recital and with orchestra: Teatro Bellini in Catania; at Teatro Massimo in Palermo with Mozart’s Concerto K.40; she opened the 100 Cellos event at RAI conducted by Giovanni Sollima; in Rome with the Orchestra Notturna Clandestina conducted by Giovanni Sollima and Enrico Melozzi; at the Accademia Filarmonica Romana for “Stupore”; in Terni for the Filarmonica Umbra; in Florence at Palazzo Pitti; in Empoli for “Fortissimissimo Metropolitano” in collaboration with the Amici della Musica di Firenze; in Scandicci on the occasion of A. Lucchesini’s 40‑year career; and in Milan at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, where she performed Mozart’s Concerto K.40 with the Orchestra Coccia of Novara conducted by M. Caldi. She has appeared at the Philharmonic in Messina, in Noto and Ravenna, took part in the Ravenna Festival 2022/2023, gave a recital at the Morellino Festival 2024, and returned to Florence in September, where she performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 for the first time in the dual role of soloist and conductor with the Orchestra Galileo Galilei. A frequent guest in the United States, she performed Haydn’s Concerto in D major with the Greenwich Orchestra conducted by Tara Simoncic in 2016, and in January 2019 she was invited to the Key Biscayne and Miami Piano Festivals. Winner of the “Città dei Talenti” Prize in 2018, in December 2019 the magazine Amadeus, on the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary, dedicated a special feature to her, releasing as a preview download her first CD, L’Alouette, recorded at Bartok Studio in September of the same year. The CD was released in October 2020 by the label Movimento Classical. In duo with Giovanni Sollima she has performed in the Sale Apollinee of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, in the Ridotto of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, in Tropea, at the Museo Nazionale di Ravenna for the Ravenna Festival 2022, in Palermo, Trieste, Livorno, Rovigo, Modica, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and in Pisa, where they opened the “I Concerti della Normale” season at Teatro Verdi. Together they recorded the CD Untitled, featuring music by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, E. Sollima, and G. Sollima for Movimento Classical (June 2022). With Giovanni Sollima and the Soloists of Teatro alla Scala she recorded the soundtrack for Antonio Albanese’s film Cento Domeniche, with original music by Giovanni Sollima, released in November 2023 by Curci/Palomar. As a trio with Giovanni Sollima and Clarissa Bevilacqua she has performed at Teatro Ponchielli in Cremona, the Philharmonic in Trento, Teatro Valentino in Voghera, Teatro Bibiena in Mantua, the Teatri di Reggio Emilia, Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, and Teatro Ebe Stignani in Imola. With the same trio, for the label Movimento Classical, she recorded the album Short Trio Stories, released in July 2024.
